COPS

The Van Buren R-1 School District is proud to announce that it has been awarded a COPS-SVPP Grant. This grant will be implemented over the next three years (23-26). In accordance with the Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Award Conditions number 25 we are informing all required and interested parties about the award.

The Van Buren Award Titled; Creating a Safe School Environment: Implementing Safety Measures to Prevent School Violence (CSSE), was awarded on 11/2/2023 for $375,937 with a district match of $125,312, for a grant total of $501,250.

Through the CSSE Project we will be providing more comprehensive safety support for staff and students. The CSSE will address adding physical safety deterrents, increase cameras and door access controls, replace some exterior doors, add safety film to the ground level windows, and upgrade the intercom system. With this grant we will also add a shooter detection system and additional handheld radios. The Know the Signs - a Sandy Hook Project program will also be implemented at the district to help teachers, staff, students, families, and community members identify at-risk behaviors.

If you would like to learn more about the grant or the efforts being made by the district to increase safety measures, we encourage you to reach out.
